What are some good products to use in between grooming appointments?

If you will be dry brushing your dog in between appointments, it is a good idea to spray a leave on conditioner before brushing to prevent breakage and to condition the hair. Leave in conditioner will make brushing out knots and small matts easy. Our favorites are iGroom Magic Detangling Spray and Hydra Ultra-Detangle and Dematting/Finishing Spray.

How often should I brush my dog to avoid matting?

The amount of time spent on brushing your dog will depend on factors such as coat texture, coat length, and activity level, as well as what kind of activities your dog does. For example, a dog that routinely goes swimming or hiking will require much more maintenance than a dog that lounges at home most of the day. For high maintenance coats, about 15 minutes every night can keep the matting at bay (Or however long it will take you to brush fully through your dog). Brush with a slicker brush, and then use a metal comb to check for knots/matts. Remember, if your comb can't get through the knot or mat, neither can our clippers! If you aren't sure about how to brush properly, or how often you should be brushing, we would be more than happy to help you! Just ask! Also, to help your dog to enjoy being brushed out, give them small treats in between the brushing as a positive reinforcement. Take breaks, and try not to make it a negative experience. Your dog should enjoy spending the time with you, and the extra attention!

What is the cost of my grooming estimate based on?

The cost of your grooming estimate is based on time, quality products, and your dogs coat and temperament. Dogs with a longer clip or with matted coats take more expertise,  which increases the amount of time it takes to complete the groom. Also, a dog with temperament problems can increase the amount of time the groom takes, as we will have to use more caution to safely groom your pet and keep us protected. Ask us how often your dog should be scheduled in order to keep your dogs coat maintained and the price of the groom more predictable!

How often should my dog be scheduled with a groomer?

Your dogs coat and activity level (as well as what activities it does in between grooming appointments) are factors in how often they should be groomed. Normally 4-6 is a good interval to keep them maintained. If they are being brushed and properly groomed in between, it might be okay to book out 7-8 weeks. Dogs that are swimmers, hikers and generally active with the family would need to be on a tighter schedule to keep them clean and mat-free.  Ask us what we think would be best to keep your pup in tip top shape!

Should I be bathing my dog in between appointments?

If your dog is a short hair breed, it is perfectly okay to wash in between.  If your dog has hair over half an inch, you will need to properly dry and brush your dog if you do decide to bathe at home. Bathing your dog without properly drying them and brushing them can lead to matting and the possibility of having to shave the coat on the next visit. If you aren't sure how to do this, ask us!

How often should my dog's nails be trimmed?

This will depend on how fast your dogs nails grow as well as their activity level! Dogs that are active can wear their nails down naturally and may not always need a nail trim while at the groomer. Otherwise, every 4 weeks is recommended to keep them at a healthy length. If your dogs nails are very long, it is recommended to get them trimmed every 2 weeks until their quicks recede to a healthy length.

What precautions can I take if my dog is nervous about being groomed?

Puppies that are first beginning to get groomed, or dogs that have had negative experiences at other salons may be nervous. The great thing about mobile grooming is that it will only be the dog and the groomer. No busy waiting room, loud salon atmosphere or strangers walking around. This environment will give your dog the chance to bond with your groomer. We may use treats to create positive reinforcement to help your dog understand that the grooming process should be a relaxing day instead of something to be stressed over. Your dog will feed off of your energy...If you are happy to see the groomer, your dog will be too! Get excited and make it a good experience! You will be so happy when your dog willingly runs into the van to greet their groomer, and have peace of mind knowing they enjoy it!

How long does it normally take to groom my dog?

This will depend on the size, temperament, coat condition and style requested on your dog. Anywhere from one to two and a half hours is normal. This is a case by case basis and can be discussed with your groomer!

Will my dog be muzzled or harnessed?

If your dog shows any sign of aggression towards any part of the grooming process, a soft mesh muzzle will be used. This allows the air flow to remain as normal, but covers the entire part of the mouth so they are not able to bite. If this step becomes necessary, we will notify you immediately.
